What to see and visit in Ciudad Real?

SierraMorena region: It is made up of the following municipalities: Almuradiel, Calzadade Cva., Fuencaliente, Mestanza, SanLorenzo de Cva., Solana del Pino, San Carlos.

Calatrava road

It has about 5,000 inhabitants. Located in the foothills of Sierra Morena, in the middle of the Ruta de los Caballeros.

  • Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption: built as a hermitage of the Virgen delos Remedios in the center of the town, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, it preserves the presbytery, sacristy, transept and dome from its origins, since the extension towards the feet of its three naves was made in the year 1926 at the end of provide the temple with greater capacity.
  • Salvatierra Castle: located on the hill of the Watchtower in front of the castle of Calatravala Nueva, it was a Muslim fortress of Roman origin of great strategic importance. It is practically destroyed.
  • Hospedería delos Caballeros: the Order of Calatrava had it built in the 17th century, to house the knights.
  • Several Hermitages: built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: Hermitage of San Esteban, Hermitage of Salvador del Mundo, Hermitage of the SantísimaTrinidad.
  • Claveros House: residence of the Clavero in the 17th century, superior of the Order of Calatrava and in charge of the administration.


Population of 1,400 inhabitants. It is located in the southwest of the Ciudad Real province and in it is the highest peak of SierraMorena, the peak of La Bañuela with 1,323 meters. Their origins are in prehistoric times and they were occupied by the Romans, the Muslims, although the true reason for their origin is a hot spring that rises below the Church. Upon discovering it, they built a hermitage and the town grew around it. This area is known as "Paraíso de los Monteros", for its abundant big game and its beautiful landscapes and rugged peaks of the surrounding mountains.

  • Chorrera de los Batanes: located at the western end of the Sierra de Hornilleros, on the left bank of the Ceceda river, next to a waterfall of said river.
  • Cereceda River: a beautiful route for hiking and where there is a peculiar fern, in addition to the place where Cervantes located the adventure of the batá in the first part of Don Quixote.

  • Las Calderas las Lastras: Near the cave paintings are Las Lastras, a horcage of the mountains with an abundance of water currents, where there were formerly Batans and mills. Today isa perfect place for bathing and leisure.
  • Hermitage of San Marcos: built in the 18th century.

It has about 1,500 inhabitants. It is on the Camino Real de Andalucia in Despeñaperros. It is bathed by the Rio Magaña. Its origins are in the Arab colonization and it became part of the Sierra Morena region in the 18th century. Its lands and mountains are rich in game, so there are small and large game reserves and hiking trails.

  • Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception: Neoclassical in style and with an 18th century façade. The church has a beautiful three-section façade and spacious staircase. The works were carried out between 1810 and 1817. Declared a national monument on July 25, 2002.


500 inhabitants. A town of Arab origin founded in the 8th century. Volcanic zone. La Laguna de la Alberquilla or Maarde Mestanza, is a crater that over time became a lagoon.

It has about 400 inhabitants. Located in Sierra Morena, in Valle de Alcudia. It is located in the basin of the Guadalquivir river, through its sub-tributary Rigüelo.

Solana del Pino

600 inhabitants. Located in Sierra Morena, in the Montoro and Robledillo valley at the foot of the mountain in the southern Sierra de Alcudia. Their lands are bathed by the rivers Montoro and Robledillo tributaries of the Jandula and the Valmayor tributary of the Yeguas. Several mountains cross the region from east to west, such as: the mountains Humbría de Alcudia, Madrona, Torrecilla and others. There are hunting grounds.

  • Diogenes Mines: already exploited in Roman times. It will be exploited again in later times and will close definitively in 1979.

Villanuevade San Carlos

It has about 600 inhabitants. It has 3 population centers: Villanuevade San Carlos and its two Annexes or Pedanías, La Alameda and Belvís. In Belvís, where the creation of this town by the Muslims originated.
